Re: 1988 Samurai Build in Utah, USA

I took on the task of removing the old body decals. It was a pretty slow project. I overheated one spot on the passenger's side and lifted some paint. Luckily, this is where the emblem goes. So, after it's detailed and the paint looks decent again. I'll replace the Suzuki badges and it'll hide the b...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

One thing - why are you going ARB rear and spartan front? I'd have thought it would be good to go ARB front, spartan rear (selectable up front should help steering, right?) I've used a Lockrite in the front of a previous rig that didn't have power steering and it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be,...

Re: Hello from Salt Lake City, Utah (USA)

I posted up a bunch of pics and commentary on where I am with the build and I'll document it as I continue.

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

Sometimes I come up with ideas that leave me sitting at my desk (or the kitchen table or behind the wheel or on the toilet) day dreaming about how I could pull it off. The last week, or so, I've worked on one of those type of ideas. I want to keep my rear side marker lights. My new rear bumper doesn...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

I've been getting the axle housing ready for the suspension change and axle swap. First I trimmed off the stock bracketry. http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q690/UT410/IMG_20140119_191631_zpsd0b17292.jpg ...and brought the housing to be sandblasted. A job I absolutely hate. After doing it on some ...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

Looks tidy. How far did you travel to collect it? (I have no idea of American geography, other then the roads I drove on round california / nevada were arrow straight through what seemed like desert for hundreds of miles) It's about a 9 hour drive heading with the wind. Coming back there's a pretty...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

I got a gift at our company Christmas party for working 5 years, they gave a nice gift card. What does any self-respecting gear head do with a little extra money? Why spend it on their project, of course. So, I stripped the interior out and drove it over to the truck bed (You guys have a different n...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

Sometime later, I got a pic sent to me from Mark at Shrockworks. The raw bumpers/sliders were ready to ship. http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q690/UT410/ShrockWorksSamurai_zps8c1b6e40.jpg I didn't have them powder coated because I have a local guy that takes pretty good care of me. As well, there...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

So, after a lot of research and lists made, I started looking for parts. I was sad to see that so many venders/folks that were a big part of the Suzuki community 5-8 years ago had moved on. The community in the US had shriveled up a bit. However, some adapted and others grew. I reached out to Jim at...

Re: 1988 Samurai Build: From "toad" to "off road"

Now onto some fun stuff. I should add, first, that I've got expensive taste but I'm cheap. I like to say "champagne taste on a beer budget." I usually pull it off pretty well because I'm patient and I'm decent at trading and selling off what I don't need. Plus, I buy and sell a lot of old ...
