You could try giving it a good squirt of WD40 when it's running. That might just help getting the brushes free, if they are stuck from mud or similar.
Then check the output voltage again.

Here is my crappy drawing of the circuit
The brake fluid lamp and the alternator lamp should come on when the engine is not running IE "not charging" as they earth via the alternator W/R wire. Once the alternator is charging the W/R wire becomes live and both lamps should go out.
The alternator should have 12v positive on the B/W wire when the ignition is on to charge the field windings, so it may be worth checking this.
There is a fuselink between the alternator and battery, but if this had blown you would have nothing working/lighting.

Bought a new unit from the STARTER MOTOR COMPANY good price as well.....wish Suzuki had fitted a captive nut on the very very hard to get at rear fixing for this.....messed about for hours trying to feed bolt into the bracket......anyway all working great now ......
