Brake Bleeding

Post by dougie212 » Wed Feb 18, 2015 8:41 pm

Hi there

I have just fitted new pads and discs to my 51 plate Grand Vitara 2.0TD. I also fitted a new caliper as it had seized.

All fitted I bled the new caliper, went to the old caliper and found no bleed nipple, just a bolt....... Im confused....

I loosened the bolt and sure enough fluid came out so I imagine its a bleed bolt of some sort but there's no way a tube is getting on there.

Im just wondering if the bolt is where a bleed nipple should be?? Does anyone know..... The brakes feel ok, but Id be happier if I could bleed them all again, and would rather know what the deal with this bolt is...

Thanks in advance..

Duncan

It should have a nipple.

Just take the one out of the old scrap calliper. Simples!

The scrapper hasn't got a nipple either..... bizarrely its just a bolt aswell. Why would they just have bolts in?

Never seen that before :er:

If you fully remove the bolt (from the scrap item so you don't lose your fluid), is it just a normal solid bolt or is it hollow with a hole in the thread near the top?

I Must be honest... I didn't take it all the way out. I was confused, and still am... very strange..

I thought the 9mm nut on the new callipers bleed nipple was confusing but could deal with that, but the bleed bolt..... Im baffled....

A gorilla has probably snapped them off in the past. The same one as knackered the other bolt!

You can get a new one at a car bits shop or eBay, but make sure you get the right thread. I'm not sure what it is, but someone will soon.

Or you could just slacken off, and tighten the bolt like I would with a nipple, (two person job) and it will let the air and fluid out. It will just make a bit of a mess, but that's what rags are for. ;)

I did undo it and got my brother to pump the brakes and let some of the fluid out.... but strangely, I was worried about the pressure pushing the bolt out if it was gripping onto only a few threads. I may just see how they feel, they feel fine at the moment... plus... Im already going round tomorrow to my brothers having spilt some brake fluid on his drive. Soap and water for the morning.....

Should be fine then. The previous owner certainly thought so.
