You ain't wrong about road speed!!! when mine was road legal 50mph was pretty much as quick as it would go.
bloody good on fuel though mine will run all day at play days on less than 10 litres and like u say its red!!
mine doesn't over heat to badly but eats alternator brushes!! the alternator on the escort is real low. also the starter takes alot of mud ingress.
my brother has a diahatsu 4track. been off roading it for a couple of years and still on same alternator and starter. i've done 3 starters and lost count of how many alternators in the same time.
cheers kev

i can see both advantages etc of each engine, but still undecided. when i go off roading and green laning, im mostly going to be out with friends in their landrovers, who have all laughed for getting an sj. i just want to prove them wrong, but i will also be using it for some / alot of standard road driving.

i have to say that a turbo whistle sounds cool, only reason ive had some of my previous turbo cars. mr2 turbo sounded like a rocket but the 306 td sounded awsome.

the 1.6 will be an easier swap, have seen the full kits on ebay with apparently every thing you need other than engine and box. so i may pop that in for starters.

Think it really depends on what your going to use the sj for? and what skills you have to carry out the conversion?
The simplest solution has got to be vitara 1.6, can keep your gearbox, engine mounts, etc. but i would try and go for an injected engine for the superior, fuel economy, cold starting and reliability, will be much better once done. Maybe even a 16v for the extra power and multipont fuel injection.(wiring isnt that bad once you get your head around it)
However if you want to go crossing rivers etc or if wirng is not your thing go for a diesel engine, peugeot engines and vauxhall engines are popular, and most require minimal wiring, you will probaly need to weld up mounts and fabricate bits and bobs, and as for top speed, im sure decent speeds are obtainable with the correct gearing.
(If you need help wiring up an injection engine drop me a pm i have done the wiring on a few now)

the conversion isnt a problem, i know a few people that would help that are good at that sort of thing, but i do want to do river crossing and even driving along rivers. that was the main reason for a diesel as people told me the petrol engine wouldnt cope.

how deep have people gone with the pet engines? and what did you do to water proof it other than the snorkle

I have had it on top of the bonnet. I was stuck and the engine ran. This is sort of bottom of dials deep.

When it pulled out i turned it over and it ran after quite a lot of turning tho.

What i will say is that wading does nothing any good. Although a derv will wade well! But you have to make sure that your fuel tank, axles, gear box, engine are all properly sealed. Also you will need to make sure that you clean out your rear breaks (if they are still on drums)

Other things like PAS need to be kept tight. You fan needs to be electric (waterproof) or have no fan it all. Depending how deep you go other things like break servo, gear box servo if you plan to fit the LDV and other liquids need to be kept sealed.

Driving down a river can be very dangerouse... if its a quick current, and you havent filled up with water yet so you can get traction look out!

Although a god example of a 1.7 TD engine in action...

And yes the lake is that deep... ive driven through it on the shallower side.

Probably not the *most* helpful piece of info, but my Dad ran a Frontera 1.7td over 300k, then the rust killed it.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

yes, ive watched that video many times, another reason to have a diesel lol... im not looking quite that extream but not far off. my friends in their disco's go to a river that just covers their bonnets, for my bonnet to sit same as theirs i would need about 5/6 inch maybe a little more lift. so i just want to be able to follow them.
