Petrol tank sender,

Post by Tramp » Mon Sep 14, 2015 8:51 am

Right then I'm currently doing some work on my petrol tank, but there is a little debris in the tank and I'd like to clear out before refitting, how do I remove my sender unit to access the tank? It looks like it's the crimped type fitting, and if I get it out will I be able to refit it?

they have 3 little bent over tabs, i bent 2 of mine out with a pair of pilers and then pulled the ring out, the sender then pops out.

mine was in pretty shit condition so when you re fit it make sure its in there good and proper or add some kind of sealer. I didn't do this and i dont think my tank is seal very well now and its back on the car.

It's not crimped.

There is a locking ring that pushes against the bent over parts. Just tap it round with a hammer and screwdriver to release it.

Fantastic, exactly as you said Dan, twisted the lock ring and it popped out,

So all sorted in the tank but I have a question about the fuel line, mine connects to the sender like this.....

Image

Which runs across the tank then joins the copper fuel line on the chassis through this

I'm pretty sure this isn't standard, and I was thinking of replacing this section with some flex as I'll be able to connect it up before raising the tank, and if I have to drop the tank in the future it will be easier todo,

So my options are cut the copper back on the sender pipe and fit a longer length of rubber flex, using jubilee clips - as before,
Or I could try and get hold of a braided line, but I'd have to flare the chassis end of the fuel line and fit appropriate fittings,

what do you all think?

I'm pretty sure mine was like that.

I now have a flexy from the sender to the old filter point and the filter is in my engine bay.

No problem, I've ordered one of these,

8mm ID and 60cm long - as long as the copper, I'll cut the copper pipe back and have a longer flex section,
