Leaking rear diff - what looks to be at fault?
Hi guys,
Not sure if anyone can tell by some of my recent posts on here but i'm not a mechanic, hoping to change that by learning about the SJ410.
I've noticed that my rear diff is leaking oil (patch on block paving out the front of house, missus is pissed!).
Any ideas what this could be based on the photos? Also what i need to do to fix it and if it's something serviceable by a noob?
Thanks guys

I also forgot to say it looks like it's leaking from the drive shaft joint in the middle of photo 2 and then running down the diff to the bottom and dripping to the floor from there?

It may be the pinion seal is knackered but its worth checking the breather on top is clear of crap or mud.

A vote for the pinion seal from me too... bit of a pain as you can't just put a new seal in, you have to replace the crushable collar inside too. And set the diff up correctly!

Any idea the best play to get these parts? Would make sense to get them ready before i start looking at it to fix it.

Personally, I would put up an advert looking for a 410 rear diff. They should be cheap and all the same ratio.
Then you can swap it in, and then spend as long as necessary doing a good job of rebuilding the other one

Good 410 diffs aren't that easy to find anymore. I'll have a look, I might have one i can spare but i'm not 100% sure.twiss wrote:Personally, I would put up an advert looking for a 410 rear diff. They should be cheap and all the same ratio.

They are out of stock at the moment but jimny bits sell a kit with a seal and crush collar, tbh you only really need the seal and crush collar ans they aren't that expensive from suzuki.

To set up the pinion preload properly the diff will need to be removed and stripped, it's best to fit new pinion bearings as well. http://forum.suzukiclubuk.co.uk/vi ... =12&t=3349

Plenty of 410 diffs here.... just too heavy to post

My 410 has just started leaking in the same spot from the rear diff.
Could the breather being blocked causing it to leak?
I've seen a couple sj breakers on ebay Phillips321 if it comes to buying a rear diff.

I went to the effort of checking the breathers, so at the same time i thought i might as well fit some breather tubes. I've cleaned up the underneath and am going to keep an eye on everything.palo123 wrote:My 410 has just started leaking in the same spot from the rear diff.
