Diff, gearbox & transfer box oil change.
Diff, gearbox & transfer box oil change.
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a 1986 sj413 and am going to do some general maintenance, I did the engine oil & filter yesterday, and I'm wondering should I do the diff, transfer & gear box?
I buy most of my car stuff from eurocarparts and have seen 5litres of Triple QX 75w-90 semi synthetic transmission oil for £23.49 or fully synthetic for £35.49.
Are either of these OK? And should I go for the fully synthetic or will the semi be OK? And I am guessing 5litres will not be enough?
Thanks for your help,
Dan.

75w90 is fine, I would probably go semi but theres no real logic behind it...

Thanks Twiss,
I missed the tech specs page
I'm slightly overwhelmed by the wealth of information on this site, I have many questions floating about inside my head

Feel free to ask them, i've done my transfer box and gearbox recently.
Get yourself a proper set of drain keys, don't listen to those who say to use a ratchet without a socket on - these are rounded and will do exactly the same to the drain plugs, oh and a oil gun, makes life a lot easier.

Thanks zook, I have the oil, have an oil gun on order but not heard of drain keys, will have to have a search!
I also did my drive belt today, took me all of about 10 minutes! I love how easy these things are to work on

Yeah, i'm the same, I went from a Corsa C (Which I still have) to the Jimny, i've not taken it to the garage yet (Except the first wheel bearing, but I didn't have the kit)
So far I've changed the transfer box seals, fitted breathers all round, replaced gearbox oil, given the engine a service and replaced the o/s wheel bearing.
Gives you a sense of achievement!
Once funds allow, i'll be ordering this.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251824852568? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Hey zook,
Do you mind explaining to me the difference please? The drain plugs on the riffs (if I'm looking at the right things) just look normal to me, t like the sump plug on the engine.
I had a quick search on google but could not find the info I was looking for!
Thanks.

That's what I was thinking, I'm going to do all my driveshaft fluids shortly and I thought SJ's had regular 17mm bolts?
