Still Rust

Post by zook123 » Tue Jul 22, 2008 8:45 pm

I know what your going to say 'he owns a fiesta so why is he asking on here?' its cuz you guys know what your talking about

lol so anyways. found this hole about the size of a 10 pence piece and i hit it with a rubber mallet and now its the size of a packet of 10 cigarettes or so. but it is totally solid otherwise.

what would you recommend doing to it? I dont want to spend lots of money messing around with it as ill probs only have the car for a year.

??

A good quality patch and weld should get it through the MOT, or remove the sill, weld in abit o 2"x2" box section in and have some solid jackable sills!

i would just be tempted to cut away all the bad metal, treat it, some how attach behind or fill it with some fine chicken wire, and fill it. Depends how onshow it is. If its on the bottom of the sill u will be amazed what underseal can hide. My mate traded in his R#@%EROVER and we covered the sills in gaffa tape and undersealed over it just so the garage would give him £500 for it.

As u say it all depends on how long ur keepin the car, how good u want the repair to be, and what ur gunna do with it when uve finished with it!

lol its under the passanger side sill. all i done was looked and i saw a bubble so me being me popped it and water just pored out. found the problem was where the mudguards used to sit was a hole and water had been going into it. so i blocked up the hole. As i said its not that big but im tempted to just whack some wire mesh in there and fill it with filler.

To be honest i dont have to do it if i dont want to but the cars only going to be with me for a year or so, until my no claims have built up so i can buy myself a vit or sj possibly. And i would just spray it in red oxide.

Hi there,

If it's not in too difficult place to weld or near the fuel tank it might not be too expensive to get a local welder to weld a patch on it for you.

Pop down to a local auto welder and if it's more than £40 they're taking the mickey. You could spend half this in bits to lash it up temporarily yourself and the welding will be a bit more permanent for when you want to sell it on and not lose too much money.

Otherwise, don't just fill it with filler, get a fibreglass kit and stick some fibreglass matting over the inside of the hole and after a couple of layers brush the resin smooth. You can sand it down later to make it more attractive if you care. Then for underneath get some plastic metal and smear it on the underside after the fibregalss has set. This will not soak up water like filler and therefore will not give you a much bigger hole that falls out one day when you least expect it to.

You can then paint over both sides and hide the underside with copious amounts of underseal. Get it all muddy and when the MOT man prods it, it will be solid to the touch of his screwdrivery poky wotsit, unlike filler.

Hope this helps and I hope it doesn't reflect how much time I have spent in the past getting rotten cars through MOT's without paying for welding!
