Trouble
Trouble
SJ 410 Well the bloddy thing has ran great for months now, but just started loosing oil and chucking blue smoke from exhaust, seems to use more petrol too.
Not sure where oil is leaking from but it seems to be falling on the back of gearbox in pics.
Any Ideas.
Thanks

Re: Trouble
Are you getting 'Blow By' if you remove the oil filler cap whilst the engine is running ?
Also on some engines you can get problems with the crankcase ventilation system either clogging up or perhaps old hoses collapsing internally

Re: Trouble
Will give it a go, it has a K and N filter on which could really do with a clean, not sure what to use or if it will make a difference or not though.
Re: Trouble
Im not very good when it comes to engines. Where should I be looking for the crankcase ventilation ?

Re: Trouble
Could be the distributor oil seal, a common failing. Also I'd get rid of the K&N and put on a genuine Suzuki filter.
If it ticks over...leave it
Re: Trouble
I am not 'Au Fait' with your engine but with a 'standard' type of crankcase ventilation there will be a pipe/hose from the crankcase/sump area through a flame trap/PCV (positive crank ventilation) valve into the air intake system/inlet manifold area so that any crankcase oil/fumes are burnt off in the engine.
If the hose/pipe/PCV/flame trap clogs or collapses there is no path for any crankcase pressure to escape.
In old engines it used to just vent overboard and you could sometimes see smoke coming out under cars whilst being driven LOL
Re: Trouble
Thanks I will have a look at bits mentioned, some people have mentioned valve seals or piston rings, so hoping its somthing a bit simpler then that.
Re: Trouble
I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it is something simple.
If the engine blows blue smoke during acceleration then it could be rings,if it tends to smoke on re applying power after 'coasting' or being on the 'over run' (say going downhill in gear but throttle closed) then it could be valve seals.

Re: Trouble
Forgot to say that is what the 'Blow By' check was for - if oil filler cap is removed whilst engine is running - any significant smoke/flow/pressure emanating from the open oil filler would point to worn rings/cylinders.But I would definitely check that the crankcase vent system is working correctly/clear of any obstructions/damage etc .
Re: Trouble
Couldnt find ant breather as such but after a bit of googling assumed this is what it is, or am I wrong, pipe circled in pic, It was full of gink so gave it a good clean. Its a little better but still chucking smoke out on acceleration. no blow back or smoke with filer cap off though.
