Heater Control Lighting - Vitara 2002

Does anyone know if the heater controls on a 2002 Vitara should be backlit when the vehicle headlights are on?

At the moment all of the blower direction buttons light up fine, but all the controls within the yellow line on the photo are dark. I had a quick look by removing some of the dash trim to the point you can see in the photo, but I couldn't see any potential bulb access. Any deeper than this and I think I'd need to remove the entire dash which seems a bit excessive to change a light bulb. Maybe I just need to put up with fumbling in the dark...?

The heater control panel should pop out.

I can’t remember if they light up or not, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a Vit/GV
