I don’t post much here any more but I’ve still got my 92 (Santana) Samurai and occasionally use it! I did the GM alternator swap today, it took me a minute to work out the wiring so I thought I’d share

First I bought this kit

I know it was expensive to get to the UK, but it was a complete bolt on solution, my old alternator hadn’t fully failed, but I was getting the battery light on when the windshield wipers, fan & lights were on and once after a drive with the above on I pulled up and turned the engine off, and it wouldn’t start, I’d not had enough volts to charge to charge the battery up & supply everything else. So I wanted I higher power alternator

So my original alternator had x2 white with yellow striped wires going to the plug, these were joined in the plug, for this new GM alternator I cut both cables & soldered them together & to a 4mm cable with a ring crimp which I attached to the bolted connection on the back of the alternator. The red cable on the alternator pig tail I put a ring crimp on and attached to the same bolted connection. The white cable from the alternator pigtail was soldered to the white cable with red striped wires which is the ignition light.

All works and my cigarette lighter to usb charger is showing 12.5v + with all the accessories on. I’d definitely recommend this kit to anyone who wants to upgrade their alternator

If I had known of that kit I would have invested in it. Lot less hassle than I had upgrading to an 80A alternator.
