rear diff finally let go!

Post by dan_2k_uk » Thu Oct 16, 2008 9:02 pm

ok so i knew my rear input bearing an seal on the diff were going for a while. Just left it to get on with it.

Had a look at it today and the bearing has huge ammounts of play in it and the seal is letting oil out and minety 4x4 club in. Also twisting the prop shaft it makes about 1/4 of a rotation between it pushing the wheels forward and backward.

Had a look inside it and it was full of a well seperated mix of oil, clean water, and a clay mousse.

The question is do i rebuild it of just slot a new one in.

Whats the score with fitting a vitara one? Are the ratios similar and will it just fit straight on the prop or will i have to fit my current flange.

Photo of oil to follow.

Good work boyo, i'm usually lazy and just find a new (secondhandnew) diff, bung that in and then repair the wrecked one when you can be bothered, that way you've always got a spare!

As for you Vit diff question, they don't bolt straight in, however the ring and pinion from front vitara diffs will fit onto a sammy diff so you can lower the diff ratios! just make sure you find 2 front vit diffs with the same ratio otherwise you'll stick in 4wd and Bang there goes part of your transmission

did it look something like this

didnt actually remove it but from looking thru the drain and filler holes i would imagine it is like that. Maybe a bit more foamy oil.

Has anyone got a 413 diff lying around before i find one then.

How easy is a straight swap as ive never had a diff out b4. As far as im aware i just need to remove the prop and half shafts and then undo the ring of bolts and pull it out in one.

rear diff is quite easy, you may need a slide hammer to help remove and fit the halfshafts tho, may also be worth inspecting the wheel bearings whilst you have the shafts out to save stripping you axle down again.
