Also, I just noticed you've said you are using the heater to cool the engine...
Are you sure your rad is clean? Even if it's 25% blocked with mud, the 1.3 rad can suffer a bit with the 1.6 engine

Re: Sj running hot
Cleaning your rad can work wonders and cause disasters. You would not believe the amount of shit that was stuck on the rad in my mum's discovery. Half a tree, a dead mouse and a hell of a lot of compost from the rotting vegetation. However, when we got the rad out and hoovered it, most of the thin elements were so rotten they went up the Dyson. By the time we were done it looked like someone had shot at it.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Re: Sj running hot
See I clean mine after every off road day... it means the mud doesn't get a chance to rot away the fins and it keeps the radiator nice
I just take the whole thing off and leave it immersed in water for an hour... then gently hose it off
DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER ON IT

When you said clean the rad, i thought you ment the inside . So i drained the system and put the hose pipe on fulll blast in the top . Now looking at the out side of it, it is packed full of mud. So i'l have a go at cleaning that out tomorrow.
I also checked the water pump pully. That seammed to move nice and easy, and i also put a new fan belt on.
