FREE OS MAPPING WITH GPS ROUTING!!! :-)

Post by dan_2k_uk » Wed Sep 07, 2011 5:46 pm

Now that OS have made their explorer maps available for free online I looked into the best way to use them.

I have just downloaded the whole of Wales and am transferring it to my phone for my camping trip there next week.

I presume this will be possible on most smartphones. My Nokia N900 supports them fully including GPS routing and waypoint marking on any public right of way.

Anyone with a bit of computer know-how should be able to use Mobile Atlas Creator to download the maps and use them with their device of choice.

You need to use the Beta version available here http://www.4shared.com/get/YSMcxAiD/Mob ... eta_1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as the current build dosent support OS maps.

I couldnt tell you what format you need for each device but my phone uses OSM tracker.

If you dont have a GPS smartphone the App itself is still very handy for viewing maps as its so fluid and you can still save them to your PC etc.

Still downloading now but looks like every zoom level for the whole of Wales is going to be about 1GB. Going to be walking so need the detail but for offroading i am only going to download the most usefull zoom level to save space. Although my phone does have 64GB onboard so could just go for it! :rockin:

I just downloaded OS map for my phone. Gives me full OS map for anywhere in the UK and automatically finds my location.
Works basically the same as google maps, and its free :D.

if you could find out what map type the tom tom uses and download them in that format then you could probably feplace the maps but then it would be pretty useless as a satnav.

As said there are apps for phones available but they rely on data connection to download maps as you go and this can be expensive and a heavy drain on battery. Also the kind of places you use OS generally dont get the best signal coverage.

I prefer memory map to the online maps, that way I always have the maps even if I have no internet access...

i guess it wont be free on any apple product unless its "jailbroken" as they live for your money!

Yeah Twiss. The best bit about this is you are never relying upon a signal. The ammount of times I have thought "I will just look on my phone" pulled it out of my pocket and  no signal!

Have had offline mapping on my phone for ages but now its OS supplying the maps I got rather excited!

The memory map ones are the same as the OS maps anyway, but you're supposed to pay for them ;)

Eventually they won't be able to charge any more... Or someone will release all of the free OS maps in memory map format!

if you don't mind illegally downloading the maps, I would get memory map

it cost me like £3 from the android market, but my mate got it from the appstore and I dont think it was much more expensive.
there's a free version that shows where you are but doesn't record anywhere you go
