Russ' 1.6 conversion - 1.6SPI into a SJ with SU carb

Post by twiss » Fri Oct 28, 2011 7:35 pm

It is alive!

Well, it's been fun and Russ' truck is working again!!! muwahahaha!

Got the 1.6 vit (ex-injection) engine in there now. Needs a proper bracket for the fuel pump and away we go!
Took it for a spin round the block today, and although it needs some tuning, the engine pulls nicely!

Just thought I would make some notes for anyone else who wants to do it.

We drilled the new gearbox/engine holes as per the regular adapter-plate-less method.

Definitely put the clutch on the engine before you put it in the truck. Much easiness, you don't really even need an alignment tool

This was an Injection engine going into a carb vehicle (rockwatt SU manifold) and as such we needed a facet fuel pump.

I also swapped the distributor from Russ' 1.3 engine onto the 1.6 engine. I was a pleb and forgot to mark the timings.
So put the engine to TDC on the combustion stroke, and re-fitted the distributor, with the rotor arm lined up with the first HT lead.
I've used a timing light to get it spot on.

Things we've needed to get for the conversion.

Crimp connectors - there's a bit of wiring to do. Just make sure you have some of the yellow/large ring connectors. You will need them for wiring up the alternator. It requires 2 ring connectors and 1 spade connector.
I also used connectors for wiring up the water pump

Extra water hose - I can never really be arsed with changing over the water rail. (Unless doing the waterpump/cambelt anyway) As such, the ports on the water rail and a bit different. You will need a longer hose to go from the water rail to the heater pipe. ... and some assorted hose clips

Extra fuel hose - for plumbing in the fuel pump. You will also need suitable hose clips. It's also a good idea to get an in-line fuel filter. Put it right before the carb and then you can see the fuel going into it. It's quite useful for diagnosing fuel problems as well!

Wire - needed for wiring in the fuel pump. I have wired a relay to the ignition coil, then the relay is powering the fuel pump.

Fuel pump - a quick note, I haven't done this for russ yet, but you are supposed to have a oil pressure shutoff switch for your fuel pump. When you turn off the engine and the oil pressure goes it will switch off the pump automatically.

good work :salute:

I'm ready to mate my 1.6 to the old box now.

was wondering about clutch alignment etc.

Is it really not a problem then?

With the engine out, you can literally just look into the center of the clutch and see if it's aligned.
Are you using an adapter plate or not?

No adapter plate.

Gunna use this method

Unfortunatly without the supercharger!
