413 engine top end death rattle, vitara engine fitting??????
Hi,
I have established that my SJ413 engine has a top end death rattle, is it now time to fit a Vitara lump? i have heard this is a popular mod, and have the following question. Is a conversion plate needed to mate the vitara 1.6 engine to the SJ gearbox, and if this is a problem, can you take an engine and gearbox straight out of a vitara, and mount into an sj without having to chop, and get special props made up, etc?
thanks in advance
Tim

Question -So if you dont need to fit a conversion plate, then whats the point?

To do it without an adapter plate you just have to drill out the top holes of the 1.3 gearbox to 12mm to suit the bolts from the 1.6
Then take the studs out of the gearbox and wind them in the opposite side.
You can then weld some studs to them to fit the bottom mounts of the 1.6

Like dan says, its dead easy to put a 1.6 in...
I did mine in a slightly more caveman fashion though! I drilled the top gearbox bolt holes out...
Then I took the studs out of the gearbox, then I drilled straight through the bottom gearbox holes through the engine casing.
The vitara gearbox has a massive bell housing in comparison with the SJ gearbox, so there is lots of extra engine metal there that you don't need.
Like I say, I drilled through, flattened off with a grinder, and then bolted together! Its been working fine for 3 years
Just a word of advice through, I would probably use nylock nuts... I didn't at first
Hope this helps!

Ah, so is it land rover wheels that people fit to SJ's, hence the big oversized look most go for, better traction off road etc? so are landy wheels the same pcd, stud pattern?

No you can't put landy wheels on an SJ... you can put SJ, vit and daihatsu wheels on though I think!
