i splitted my gearbox from the engine , in both of the engines i took at a few months ago makes life much eaiser and plus it gives you more room to move the engine around in the bay.

I havent done it any way other than lifting it by hand onto a bare chassis but I would guess its considerably easier with the front clip off. Well worth the time taken to remove it if the bolts are in ok condition.

With my 1600 stripped of inlet and exhaust manifolds it was easily light enough to lift on with 3 people so I would say you should be able to lift a 1300 in with the front clip off.

Two people above and one underneath with decent gloves on to guide the gearbox mount into the right spot.

When we put my engine in, 2 of us lifted it over the front clip, standing on the tyres lol

we used some rope and a scaffold pole! :)

Thanks for the offers of help. I think i wil leave it for now, its just soo cold and unpleasant outside, i only have a single garage, so have to wheel it out each time, in the dark, etc, and christmas is just around the corner?
Think i will take my time, and if the weather improves between christmas and new year, i will rope in a friend/or brother, take the box off, then hire a crane (i can get one for 40 quid for a long weekend) and swap the engine.
I got a replacement engine and box, might go out to the garage now and pour a cap full of oil down each plug hole, to make sure the rings are free, and spin it over by hand a couple of times.
With regards to taking the clip off, and gaining height - i only have standard axle stands, and from the pics, i just dont think i will get the angle
Thanks for the assistance
Tim

Hi,
I decided to split the engine and box, and now have the new engine in and bolted up. The only things i need to do to get it running are, find a carb to inlet manifold gasket, but these seem hard to come by unless you by the complete headset, any ideas?

I made my own out of some thin cardboard (cereal box) ran with that for a year or you can get some proper gasket paper from a motor factors

Thanks for the tips, i opted to split the engine and box, and it went in without any tears. However i think i have destroyed the carb, see my new topic in the bar area of the site, thanks again for the advise, Tim
