Everyone says the auto choke is the main problem with the standard 1.3 carbs. Mine has this problem as well not all the time but sometimes, I just live with it at the min

Is there away of just fixing it instead of binning the whole thing and having the hassle of fitting a mon standard one?

What's price and availability like on an SU conversion ?

Price, you should be looking at around £100-120 for a manifold, £50-80 for a carb, £20 for a needle and spring and you're away!

Seriously though, best mod I've done to my SJ except the mud tyres. Its a better mod than a 1.6 8v engine! Super reliable as well

Manifold - rockwatt or rhino ray
Carb - Easy
Needle/Spring - sucarb.co.uk or a good classic performance parts shop

I use these guys...

Check the SU Carbs thread at the top of the engine section for more details

I think you can get a manual choke conversion if you ask around on forums, but I've never seen one for sale. I'll tell you what I tell everyone, Su isn't your only option I've got the 32/36 dgv weber conversion kit on mine, I think its good as you still retain the original airfilter & throttle cable, also it bolts straight on & looks a lot like the original

Only problem is with the Webers is that you don't see them around 2nd hand much any more!

... and that they can cut out up steep hills if you don't mod' 'em

Hello everyone,

Thought i has solved it with a simple adjustment.... but is it ever as easy as that, haha.

was working fine, accept having to blip the peddle for a while untill it was warm.

driving along and it all of a sudden jumped up to relay fast revs, turned to go back home and it stopped after a while. I carried on my journey and about 5 minutes later the rev's came up again. drove it to my destination where i turned it off and left it for a while. came back and started fine and idled fine. got about 15 minutes up the road and it started playing up again. and held a high rev all the way home.

i am now unsure of what it is and am contemplating the SU carb option.

When the weather warms up a bit more, you can remove the choke plate.
Could save you having to fork out for the conversion right now, as long as you can deal with the issue until its warm enough to start without choke!

I still highly recommend the SU conversion though.
I had a 1300 engine which bit the dust... got to the point where it just wouldnt start.
Put the SU on it and used it for a year after that ;)
