blowing white smoke :(

Post by g-pope » Wed Feb 08, 2012 11:32 am

hi, my beloved 413 lwb has started to blow some white smoke from the exhaust until its up to temp. i had the head gasket done a few months back and all seems fine with that as the coolant levels dont seem to be dropping, so i'm thinking that maybe its got something to do with the valve seals but i can not for the life of me find anywhere that sells new ones.

can anyone please give me some advise on this? is it just the cold weather or am i right to be looking at the valves? and does anyone know where i could buy replacement parts.

thanks.

I think if the valve seals went it would be more like blue oily smoke...
Assuming your head gasket was fitted correctly, I'm not too sure..

It could just be the cold weather to be honest and just condensation in the exhaust.

white smoke is generally water vapour i.e. headgasket

There's no other symptoms of the headgasket going are there? loosing water, overheating or the smell of exhaust fumes coming from the rad with the cap off and engine running?

Perhaps might be worth checking the headbolts are correctly torqued up?

thanks guys, no there are no other signs of loosing any water, although i did just have another thought...my fuel pump ( i think ) has a problem and has oil leaking from the housing, could the oil be getting into the fuel there? or am i clutching at straws.

If it was oil, the smoke would have a blue tinge to it.

I would suggest a new fuel pump though as oil leaking from it is a sign that one of the diaphragms has split and it will probably fail altogether in the future.

White smoke water, blue smoke oil, black smoke fuel

as said above if you are not loosing water, i would just go on condensation build up, especially if it clears when warm

i'd just keep an eye on the water and wait for the warmer weather

White smoke can also be diesel...
