do you think I've knackered it?
do you think I've knackered it?
Hello All, Offroading yesterday and sammy was running a treat apart from dodgy starter( aren't they all) but when I was loading it started to overheat. the guage never entered the red but under the bonnet the expansion bottle had fallen off taking the cap off at the samre time. I switched off still running ok but now it wont start. Head Gasket?

Re: do you think I've knackered it?
engine cranks and fires intermittantly complete with spectacular backfiring every now and then. Before I switched it off it was running fine. I have weber carb conversion and fuel pressure guage so I know fuels getting through. Is it possible after switch off head temp increased enough to blow gasket do you think?

Spectacular back fires almost sounds like timing.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

I'll check timing first, did seem a bit down on power and pick up from tickover was getiing increasingly hesitant. I havent checked timing since changing carb and notice the dizzy is a the end of its adjustment. Im thinking the previous owner was trying to compensate for the crap original carbs overfuelling.

Dizzy cap off and found points totally closed up and almost fused together, new points/condenser methinks and all will hunkydory( in my dreams).

That could well be all that is needed. It would only spark/fire when the points opened. When the condenser fails the points spark and burn up/stick. Best of luck..

Points ,condenser changed and now runs a treat, for some reason my 92 sammy has a 410 dizzy- seems to work fine and at least I understand these! trouble is now the water pumps sprung a leak- why is it we fix one thing only to then have to do another
