Front bumper?

Post by Newtomud » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:38 am

Silly Question..
Are the front bumper mounts for a SJ413 and a SJ413-Samurai the same width?

I think so, they're on the end of the chassis.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

They mount the same, the Sammy bumper has some holes to mount plastic end caps onto (and a recess where they fit on the corners) but fitting wise they are the same, I ran a standard 410 bumper on my sammy for a while, it just wasn't wide enough to mate up with my flared standard samurai plastic wheel arches

So an after market bumper would fit a SJ413 and a SJ413 samurai?
I'm only asking as I might have a chance of a heavy duty front bumper.

yeah it would, most heavy duty bumpers mount from the bull bar mount holes in the chassis any way - and they are the same whatever model year or country of production. There arent many (any?) that mount from the original tube mounts as the plates with the captive nuts welded on arent very thick & I imagine mounting it on the exisiting mounts would just lever it against the chassis, If you have some reversal towers fitted on the front you might not be able to use a Heavy Duty bumper as these secure to the same holes (the same as if you want to use a bull bar with it)

On another note, Some heavy Duty bumpers have tabs to weld on to the chassis & additional clamps

Thanks Tramp  I guess I just needed conformation that it would fit..The original bull bar brackets are still bolted on but been cut off half way down there length by the previous owner, I have no idea why he didn't just unbolt them?
I have no idea what reversal towers are but there's nothing else bolted to these mounts.
Thanks again

No worries! if youve not got bull bars or shackle reversal towers I'm sure it will fit!

Reversal towers come with the shackle reversal kit, they add a little lift and let the shackles sit at the back of the spring so you don't get the same dig in issues with the 'fangs' (which lets you use longer shackles if your that way inclined) some people don't like the shackle reversal kit but it works alright for me.

Whats betting the bull bar mount bolts are siezed solid! Be prepared to get the grinder out and cut the heads off,

I think I understand now what reverse shackles are.. I was talking to a guy (who had been competing for years ) at the Indoor 4x4 show in Stafford and he said put the shackles at the rear of the spring to stop the front end digging in. Is this right?

Ref seized.. I'd just said that to Mrsnewtomud (would go and look but it's pouring down here)

Yeah. Basically a tower to attach the front of the spring in a fixed position and then a shackle in the old rear position that was the old fixed point.
