Weber Carb/ brakes not servo assisted
Weber Carb/ brakes not servo assisted
Hi Everybody, just joined the forum and just picked up an sj14 today. It's been offroaded, I need it as a run around for our small farm. Its 1987, bashed about a bit but basically solid enough, the mileage is only 65000. Anyway, the guy I got it from upgraded the carb to a weber DG or DF series. Trouble is he says this means the vacuum cannot go to the servo as it will effect the performance of the carburettor. Is that right? Do I need to put a standard carb back on if I'm to have any decent brakes?
Appreciate your thoughts/advice,
Regards, Danny

Re: Weber Carb/ brakes not servo assisted
Hi Danny, welcome to the club .
Not sure what you have there a SJ410 or the SJ413. I don't think the 410 has servo assisted brakes anyway (or most don't), but the 413 has. I must admit I've never heard of anyone having to disconnect the servo to make the carb run right. You could reconnect the pipe to the servo and see how it runs, however a few guys on here use weber carbs and hopefully they can give you some better advice on setting it up.

Welcome to the site Danny,
post some pictures up and we will see what you've got. I hate to say it but I think the bloke you bought it if fed you some rubbish about the vaccum for the brake servo. I don't think I've ever heard of that before! I'm running a weber (dgv) on mine & brakes are fine! I can't think of any physical reasons why either as you get the vaccum from the inlet manifold rather than from the carb itself.

Thanks for the welcome guys and for the advice. You have confirmed my thoughts. It is an sj14, the servo is there but the vacuum pipe is blanked off. There is a snorkel on the intake, perhaps they thought the vacuum would be best put to use for that alone. I'll fit a T connector and put it to the servo and see what happens, need to go and get some pipes first. The brakes do work fine with a little effort.
I'll put up some photos later.
Cheers, Danny

Oh, forgot to ask, is the exhaust front down pipe the same for 1.0 and 1.3?
Thanks, Danny

Welcome m8
Its either an SJ410 with a 1.0 engine
or
an SJ413 (1.3 engine)
They didn't make an SJ14
Any pics?

I'm pretty sure it will be a SJ413 with the 1.3 engine as you won't fit a downdraft weber to a side draft sj410 1.0 without a lot of effort! Although it may be a 410 with a 413 engine fitted.
Can you see where you take the vaccum point from? its on the inlet manifold directly under the carb, I can link a pic if you can't see it,
It sounds like hes fitted too narrow a bore pipe for the snorkle if it's effecting the engine when you apply the brakes, I'd refit the brake servo pipe & see how you go
As for the down pipes I'm pretty sure they are different
