Sj410 gear changes are hard work.....

Post by b6mfd » Mon May 28, 2012 10:56 pm

Iv just put a deposit on an 87 sj410, it's nice and solid and fired up fine from cold and sounded nice and smooth, the only issue I found was getting it into gear and there not being
Much travel in the clutch before it was off, iv only driven later 413's so didn't know if this is how they are or if it needs a new clutch? It has been stood a while so don't know if this has anything to do with it? I got a couple of hundred quid off the asking price so have a few quid if it does need a clutch. Any advice would be much appreciated.

First off I would change the oil in the gearbox and check the clutch cable is adjusted correctly.

If the bite is right at the bottom of the pedal travel it might still be dragging a little when you have it fully down.

If not its so easy to fit a new clutch it dosent really matter.

I would probably just fit a new clutch and release bearing then you know it's good. They aren't expensive and only takes a few hours (on the floor) to do.

Has it been used offroad lots? if so the bell housing could've ended up being filled with mud and can dry out the gearbox input shaft and release bearing causing issues with gear changes.

If it hasn't been used offroad much I would just try adjusting the clutch seeing as its not that old in that case. do you know if they replace the release bearing as well?

The clutch should 'feel' the same on the 410 as it does on 413/Samurais the only difference is the size of the clutch.

I have a Samurai that sat for a few years although it had a new clutch in it.

The clutch was never right when i got it and felt like it was sticking on sometimes.

When it did eventually fail (whilst off road) found the friction pad had split in two right round the centre where the rivets hold it on, so I reckoned it had stuck to the flywheel due to sitting a long time and when I tried to move it the pad broke and it had been running on half the friction pad

Im told it hasn't been used off road, and theres nothing i noticed to suggest otherwise.
Im not sure what has been replaced, but should have a better idea when i collect it tonight so il let you know.
Il have a play with the cable and see if that helps at all, if not il get a new clutch ordered :)
il get some pics up too :)
