91 vitara carb engine , not starting. HELP ME

Post by rossb » Tue May 29, 2012 6:19 pm

right focks i have a 1.6 8v carb engine , i have taken the whole thing out and resealed it all . ive put it back in and connected everything proper. its turning over but not starting , ive double checked the timing and made sure the distributor is set right . ive taken the plugs out to check if they are sparking and they are . ive poured a bit of petrol down the carb and after a few turns all it does is give off a really loud bang.
car was running fine before apart from all the seals leaking, so not sure it could be the fuel pump.
can anyone help with this

Take the fuel hose off the carb and put the end of it into a container of some kind, then turn the engine over.... if the pump is working it will spray a load of fuel out!!!

Big bang normally means the mixture or timing isnt right... but it doesn't really mean anything if you pour the petrol directly into the carb

Oh dear hope you haven't compressed it and bent the valves or anything like that...
If you can get us a pic of your set up it might help...

U would have to have cranked it for a fair while to fill it with water from the carb!

Get some detailed photos up of the hoses to the carb, fuel pump, and inlet so we can see if we can identify whats the wrong way round.
