hi there just whipped the head of my 413 engine because its a bit smokey and wanted to know if was piston rings but i didnt do a compression test before i took the head off with oil in the cylinders,
the bores are really good condition no scores and a very minimal lip however im not sure if there should be play side to side on the piston if you push hard left to right (standing at the front of the sj it moves about 1mm.
need to know if this is normal and if euro car parts or anywhere that would have the rings in stock on a saturday will sell the 413 rings as they seem a bit hard to come by correct me if im wrong
ill get the engine number i think its an A but ill check in the morning while im rebuilding the head
thanks

Re: sj413 engine advice on piston rings
Ive had 2 engines that were smoky. I did a comp test on both, 1 was valve stem seals, nice easy job. The other was rings, there wasnt much difference in how far the pistons moved it was more how easy it was to move them.
As for getting a set of rings rocking horse poo sprung to mind, the best i got was it could take 3 to 6 months to get them

Robbie and Trotter did you try http://www.karengine.co.uk/Kes/BUYGUIDE/HTML/RS413.HTM
Also rings are easy to source in the US and wouldn't end up that expensive if you had to import them.
