Massive Vibrations

Post by TITCH » Sun Aug 12, 2012 11:47 pm

Hi Folks,

not sure if the SJ gearbox is the same here..
Hopefully many of you can relate to the Rascal 4x4 I've now got, SJ chassis & axles..I think..sure, the gearbox is from a standard Rascal going through the SJ transfer box.
Terrible vibrations is an understatement, but disconnect front prop, drove it..same,,looked at the back of the gearbox on it's UJ to the transferbox..rear wheels jacked up, running in 3rd at tickover and it makes the gearbox look like it's got the judders big style..the UJ looks ok, feels ok, but the box is 'shivering' it's little head off.
Question is, does anyone know if such a box is likely to have internal shafts that can cause the vibrations I'm experiencing...difficult I appreciate unless you can see what's happening.

Which box goes on the SJ's..is there a post I've missed on SJ gearbox issues....

Hope someone can point me in the rough direction of where my trouble may be.....
Thanks,

Titch

By what you say I would take the small propshaft between the gearbox and transfer box off and then see how the UJ's feel. They can seize up and cause vibrations.

I'll look at that then Darrell,
I suppose it's quite possible really yes.

I'll write back, if I get chance later today I will investigate.

Thanks Darrell,

Also check the mounts on the Tbox, sometimes need to physically remove them for this, if one has split then the tbox will be moving around lots causing vibes.

Normally you'll get bad whines and noises coming from the gearbox or tbox before bad vibrations.

Most likely suspect is as Darrell suggests bit I'd also check the UJs on the rear propshaft.

Thanks Scottie too,

I'd like fix this bugga before the weekend as I'd like the truck on my stand at a Vintage machinery show locally..bit of an 'attraction' to say the least..but time is against me as usual...

I'll aim to look at all uj's & mounts yes, trouble is the adapting of Rascal parts to the SJ Chassis.
In total fairness, it's ben well thought out and I guess these past few years just been abused and a little neglected..plus I know it has stood for a while.
A mate has helped me with beefing up the steering arm construction on the chassis leg, that has improved things no end and whilst have have no moans about the build, which is incredible, I just need to fine tune things for the road use that I will be giving it.

Does anyone know if that short UJ from the gearbox to transfer box is likely to just be SJ stuff, I reckon I can photograph it if need..but I shall aim to get it off tonight and have a look..
Thanks all, I appreciate the advice here,

I've just had a look to see if I could find the build thread on here but it must have been before 'the changeover' I thought it was an SJ engine & gearbox too, not the rascal engine, but I could be wrong.... in fairness I think the rascal uses the same f10a engine as the Suzuki 410 any way.

If it does turn out to be a tight UJ and your unsure what size you have, this info will help identify it.

Hi Tramp,

yes, that's the Truck!
I am in touch a little via e mail with one of the guys that built it, obviously memories are fainter than when first done.. but I have asked the question..
I've now got the UJ off the back of the gearbox to transfer box... a little play detected.
Just attempting a picture, then try to measure the thing......
I'm no mechanic I must say, principles I can understand, hammers I understand, but patience & physical I have to take slower......

Thanks Darrell,
I'll attempt to relate to those dimensions.
I think that I have, well sure, the Rascal gearbox..here's the UJ from transfer box to it..any motor factor you reckon??Image
