anyone in south/mid wales?

Post by james thomas » Sat Sep 15, 2012 9:51 pm

hello again, sorry if im beginning to be an annoyance on here. I was wondering if there is anyone local with SJ experience, who could have a look at my 1992 samurai 1.3 and tell me whats wrong with it, or if im worrying about nothing.
im in south powys not far from swansea and not far from brecon.
i use it for going back and forth to work only a mile or 2 but im sure it could be better on the road.

james

all haha. think the thrust bearing is rattly and its either the breaks or diffs are slowing it...... thats what i think, would like a second opinion though.

ahh right haha well without hearing it for myself i dont know, but if i was you id take the wheels off and check what you can see without removing anything like the gearbox just incase its something silly and easy to fix, best thing is to rule out as much as you can, then when your sure its something like the thrust bearing you might have to find the time to do it while your at it check the clutch assembly aswel best to make sure verything is okay so you dont have to revisit and remove the box again.

i dont think theres ayone on here from your area, so best to see if anyone knows of common problems or anything like that, whatever you do try and do it yourself and save yourself from being ripped off by garages...

right well you might have the same as what mine was like, have you checked the brakes at all? if not then you need to check that the brakes arent binding then youll know if its the brakes slowing the car down, my caliper sliders were seized so the pads were worn at an angle and werent releasing so i removed the caliper and the metal dowel in the sliders and cleaned and greased them so now theyre fine and dont bind, check that the drums spin after the brakes have been applied if not then re adjust them and you should be sorted on that, with the rattling thrust bearing, i dont know, and if its not the brakes binding then you might have to check your diffs and gearbox, depending on how bad the bearing has gone it could even be the gearbox...

my car had been sat on someones front garden rotting for 10 years so alot of things were seized and binded.. like i said rule out all the things easy to do so you can say your sure its the bearing... and checking the brakes is easier than checking the diffs...

good luck! I hope it is the brakes as its easier than fixing diffs lol and when you do the brake make sure to use some copper slip too...
