engine oil leak.. whining gearbox.. help please!..

Post by Jay18 » Sat Sep 22, 2012 5:40 pm

i had my engine running for about a hour and a half yesturday and today i had it running about an hour and i noticed alot of oil in the ground underneath the car..
it seams to be coming from a slot in the bottom of the bell housing/clutch housing and i think its the crank seals gone on the back of the engine and leaking into the clutch housing and out of that hole?

the slot most of the engine oil is coming through...

engine oil level has been dropping slowely aswel so its deffinitly engine oil and i can tell by the smell..
also when the engine is running and its in nuetral there is a loud whining from the gearbox, when i put the clutch in the whining stops... i thought maybe the whining could be because of the oil going into the clutch?

what do you lads think?..

need help fast i want the mot done on it...

can the crankshaft seal be done easily? and where do i get front and back saft seals from?

It could well be the crankshaft seal leaking, but make sure you have a good look first. I once though the seal was leaking on mine but it turned out to be nothing more than the oil filter leaking. A small leak on the filter travelled along the flange between engine and sump all the way back to the gearbox and then went inside the bell-housing and dripped like yours.
My gearbox is also noisy in neutral and has been for at least 5 years, until the clutch peddle is pressed. I assumed it was the clutch thrust bearing but after I fitted a new clutch and bearing it was still there. I am assuming its the input shaft bearing on the gearbox worn (sounds dry! but the level is correct). I'm not pulling it to bits so it's staying that way :S .

thanks mate will check that tomorrow, andi wont worry too much about that noise then, will still have a look at the gearbox when i do the crank seals unless its what yours was but im pretty sure it is the crank seal with the amount of oil thats came out..

Gearbox off - clutch off - flywheel off - The seal is fitted into a plate that can be removed to make it easier to fit. I believe the oil seal is just a 60x80x8 (but don't quote me on that !)

right so it can be done without removing or stripping the engine so thats good to know, i found a bottom end engine gasket set on the bay for £17.50 i think it has the seals i need and is the front seal easy enough to do without removing engine?..

If the fronts not leaking I would leave it alone. Yes it can be replaced easy enough but the cambelt needs to come off.

did you manage to get this sorted?

I'm having similar problems, pretty sure oil was leaking from around the filter, so have done a full oil/filter change which has seemed to cure the leak, however like yours she whines a lot louder that she used to and when driving in 3rd and 4th it's a lot whinier (than it used to be at driving).

Haynes said possibility of oil on the clutch, but so many possibilities make it hard to pin point, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've for an oil and filter change since an the cranks dal is still definitely the problem with mine and the whining gearbox is just something I'm beginning to live with as it is an old car anyway, try greasing your UJ's maybe that could make a whining noise?

u sure the oil isn't coming from the dizzy housing and running down the back of the head onto the gearbox?
