Do you know what the actual emissions were?

The daughters Polo failed, so on the advice of the mot station I added some engine oil flushing additive, ran the engine at fast tickover for an hour, changed the oil and filter. And for good measure put some Redex type additive in the petrol and changed the air filter and it passed.

It also a good idea to give the car a good run just before taking it for its MOT.

Give it a good service, oils filter etc, tune and checkover.

Spark plug gaps
Clean the carb
Set the air fuel ratio with a gas analyser & set the idle idle
Make sure the air filter is nice and clean
Make sure all the ignition system is in good condition, check points gap if you have points.
Check timing etc.
Make sure the pcv valve is clean and working

If it's burning oil that won't do the emissions any favours ;)
