where can i get a key from?
it is a 2000 soft top with efi.
also when the ign is on the yellow check engine light comnes on?
i hope someone can help as i do not plan to get it road legal for a while but i would like to get it running soon

Re: no key
Not sure about immobilisers on them? Might be a bit too advanced for a suzuki.
If you can get the barrel serial number suzuki is probably the only place you could get one, not sure if motor factors have the ability to cut keys from the code. Other option is a barrel and set of keys from a scrapper. But that would entail changing all the locks.

Re: no key
thanks
i have no door keys either.
is there not an imobiliser on them then, i thought i read somewhere that there was.
another barrel and key would be ideal.
i will try to get the car started tomorow with the screwdriver method.
good job i checked, no oil, no radiator water, no fuel!
plenty of screen wash though.
any other thoughts?
thanks

Re: no key
If got a nasty feeling the key is matched to the ecu or some module or other and a new key and barrel won't work.
I think the check light is also on because the immobiliser is still on.
Being a 2000 model is it the last of the vitara's or is it a grand vitara

Re: no key
That explains the check engine light if there was no oil. Give it all a once over and spin it over. Im not sure if they have immobilisers on or not.
If they do have immobilisers theres ways and means of dissabling them. Usually with a good pair of wire cutters.
If it does just keep on turning over and wont start check all mechanical stuff first, fuel, spark etc....
Im not exactly sure how to check for an immobiliser. If it is a manufacturer fitted item there will probably be a sticker in the window. Year 2000 probably will have one. With it all being efi as darrel says keys and ecus may be linked.
A phone call to an auto electrican or car door lock person may give some info.
I do know when my mate locked his audi a4 keys in the boot a mobile lock smith 'broke into it' got the codes off the barrels and made him a key with a chip linked to the immobiliser (like a standard spare car key). No idea what the price was.
My sammy had a diy immobiliser and alarm fitted it worked by stopping power to the ignition coil preventing a spark. It took me a while to figure that out as it was a diy fit it was easy to diy remove.

Re: no key
since talking to my sons mate who has a jimny, the keys look the same and it aparently containes a tranposnder which controls the ecu to coil wiring.
there are 3 options open by the sound of it, pay the dosh and get a new key, swop back to a carb engine, my son has one in his sj, so easy to see what i need, or bin the lot and stick in a rover v8!
i like the v8 proposition but it would take a lot longer to get ready for the muddy stuff.
i do have experience of v8's having fitted one to my bedford cf and then another one to my brothers transit back in the 80's.
i suppose i an a bit luckyier than some, as i do not have to use it on the road, have some spare cash for the project, have lots of tools and the knowhow/experience of modding, but not quite as much time though, i was hoping for a simple off roader, ha-ha!
i am hoping to post some pics here as and when.
thanks guys.

Re: no key
Easiest way round it the. Would be to get a handy autoelectrician and just scrap immobiliser. Im sure some of the lads in the suzuki know will be able to you how to by pass it.
A mate of mine converted to a 1300 twin cam with an immobiliser. Dunno what he did but all that has is a push to start button.
Rover v8s are a bit over kill in an SJ but it has been done several times. Im sure there is a mod on here to swap a 16valve from efi to carb.

Re: no key
Superb. I like a good electrical diagram. I got one off the chap i bought my zuk off.
Shame someone rewired it in the dark with my eyes shut. But everything works.
And its always the red wire on mine. Dunno if everyone elses is the same. Lol
