Screaming Belt Noise SJ410

Post by graham8622 » Thu Nov 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Hi guys.

I just bought my first Sj410. It's a 1985. I love it.

It has been driving fine after having it serviced.

Today it started making this crazy loud screaming noise when I press the gas. It is really loud.

It does not make the noise when its idle. It only makes it when I'm on the gas. When I press the clutch it stops straight away.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Thanks
-Graham

Usually fan belt. Just requires tightening.

Presume it same set up as 413. As you look in engine bay you'll see alternator. Should have a curved arm with a slot all the way along it and a bolt. Slacken bolt off and with a bar just ease alternator out a bit to tension belt a bit more.

What them up there said ^^^^^^^ :D , but treat yourself to a new belt. If it's been screaming the chances are the belts glazed and will need excessive tension to grip , there only cheap

A quick way of checking if the noise is coming from the fan belt if it isn't obvious that it needs adjusting or replacing is to trickle some water over the belt as it's rotating. In some cases the water will increase the grip of the belt and in others will lubricate it - but in either case it will change what is happening and point you in the right direction.

What them above said

Mine used to scream like a b******* when there was any moisture in the air. Checked the belt and it was badly perished and cracking. Went down the the local hydraulics place. they found me a belt virtually the same but a bit shorter (my alternator was almost at the end of the travel on the bracket with the old belt so I went for a shorter one). Much cheaper than going to the main stealer or Halfrauds
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.
