Re: Project Bodge
Along with the SU and power steering the rear disc is one of the best mods going. Havent touched mine since they were fitted. Compared to drums even just the maintainance aspect is superb.

Re: Project Bodge
Thats good to hear. I have nothing but trouble with my drums. Generally have to take them apart on a weekly basis. Probably due to driving through to much deep water .

Re: Project Bodge
Well i made a start on the conversion today. Didn't get much done as i couldn't really be bothered , but il have a proper go at ot tomorrow.
Stripped it down
Cut the old drum off the half shaft. So as not to damage the bearing.
Then fitted the caliper bracket and the bearing retainer. Had a bit of a problem with the split bearing retainers i bought. As the bearing sticks out the axle about 3mm so the new bearing retainer won't screw back all the way and there is a gap between the axle and the retainer. If i knew this was going to happen i would have cut the middle out the old drum and used that instead, but id all ready cut that up. Think il do that on the other side.
Then cut the middle out the drum to make the other disc holder.

Progress is progress bud.
Mine has been slow but getting there. Looks like a tidy job. Are you using front discs and calipers?

Re: Project Bodge
I've wondered about those split retainers as the normal ones they sell appear to to stepped. I assume these fit flush with the axle while holding the bearing fully in (as they should do).

Re: Project Bodge
Been "Googling"
It seems to me those retainers are not really stepped, just have a chaffered edge.
It seems the gap would normally be filled with the caliper plate made by Muddyzook.
As your using the front caliper mounts (as many do) you would be better off using the drum backplate cut out.
Sorry for never looking into this before
Maybe you could cut a spacer plate out , then fit a cut out backplate/retainer next time you do a bearing change.
Having said that, it's not going anywhere with just the washers I suppose

Re: Project Bodge
Ahh yes that makes sence. Thanks for the info Darrell .
It does seem ok with the washers, just looks a bit bodge. I will use the original drum retainer on the other side, and i will have to change the split one when the bearing next go's. Which probably wont be to long .

Re: Project Bodge
could you just make a ally spacer out of some 3mm sheet? you could use the plates as a template and just make the hole in the centre a little bigger than the size of the bearing.
