Another 1600 conversion thread

Post by Jordi » Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:51 pm

Which 1600?

From what i can gather 3 mains types. Carb'd, 8v SPI, and 16valve? Am i right which is easiest to fit?

Reading through the thread keep reading about skinny starters. When i read the tech/how to it said any 1300 or 1600 starter?

Again the write up says use Vit dizzy but several threads say to swap it for the 1300 dizzy?

I thought this would be a simple thing to plan but loads of different ways to do it apparently.

So which engine is best to use. Bearing in mind i want to stay on SU carb.

Cheers
Jordi

For an engine???? I paid that for a whole vit with 12 months MOT that I used for 6 months and then took the engine and transmission out for my SJ

Carb's 8V is easiest to fit.

You can either grind the block/starter and use the 1.3 starter or just use a skinny starter.

Use the dizzy that comes with the engine, you can swap to a 1.3 dizzy but you need to swap the dizzy housing as well and there's not really any point as the dizzy internals are the same anyway, and this is only if you are running carb.

With spi or 16v mpfi you need to run the dizzy that comes with the engine.

I think the dizzy swap was a wiring issue in the thread i read. Less to wire up on the 1.3.

Whats a skinny starter come off?

Will any 8 valve work off my SU carb? Or do i need a carb'd engine to start?

Thats another option i'm looking at scottie. Buy a vit and just whip the engine out and break the rest.

If you used an engine that was originally a single point injection then you'd need a dizzy off a carb'd engine.

The wiring on 1.3 8v and 1.6 8v dizzy's is identical as the the dizzy internals are the same.

I'm not sure what models the skinny's are off bit there's a middle size as well that I think can be used with no grinding involved, grinding the block is easy enough to do though to just run the original starter.

Any 8v engine will work! The block and head on the 1.6 8v's are all identical apart from the fact the spi doesn't have a mechanical fuel pump fitted.

Scottie, the wealth of knowledge you have never fails to amaze me. Its great. I also have a feeling you have repeated this thread more than once. Sorry for making you do it again. I just got confused as each thread and conversion seems to be slightly different. I'm not even going to go into 16valve on an SU.

Yup, the hunt is on for a 1.6 8 valve.

If its SPI i need to swap my 1.3 dizzy onto it and fit a fuel pump.

Thanks for the help

 No worries, it;s the problem with being bought up with Suzuki's, you pick a few things up on the way

I think you'll need to use the 1.3 dizzy housing as well if you use the 1.3 dizzy.

Couldn't be any simpler! All the carb models are pretty much wired up the same.

Been offered engine minus coil, alternator, starter and fan. £60

Coil i have. Alternator i have, starter i have fan?

It is as simple as redrilling my 1.3 fan isn't it?
