Hi folks, Im in the process of doing a 1.6 vit to 410 conversion and need a new air filter. are the standard 410 paper filters any good, or is it better to fit the more expensive k&n replacement. Do the K&Ns perform any better. any advice welcome. There is going to be a snorkel fitted if it makes any difference.

Which air filter?
Re: Which air filter?
personally i'd use the standard airbox and hook the snorkel to that.. dont think a K&N makes much diff in a sj to be honest. I've got one fitted direct to my su carb and it works but not really noticed any diff from the standard filter
if in doubt, FLAT OUT!

Re: Which air filter?
Thanks for the reply, Im going to use the standard airbox as you suggest, Its just that ive seen k&n replacement filters to go in the airbox, but they are about 45 quid where as the original is about a tenner. I was just wondering if the stock filter and airbox will hold the engine back at all.

Re: Which air filter?
I wouldn't ever use a k&n unless its one of their heavy duty filters but then you might as well just use a standard filter. Standard k&ns actually allow te finer particles of dust through, something you don't really want in an offroader that will be used in dusty conditions in the summer.
I would either use the 1.6 airbox or adapt a 1.3 carb top to fit the 1.6 carb then link it to a 1.3 airbox with an ITG filter if they still do them for the 1.3? They are really good filters.

Re: Which air filter?
Im using a 1.3 carb top with a 410 air box, Ive had to cut the elbow off the airbox and spin it round a bit to get a better line to pipe it up, So on your advice I will replace the air filter with a decent OE replacement.
Cheers.

Re: Which air filter?
You can't just bolt the 1.3 carb top onto the 1.6 carb, you need to add a piece of tube that fits the carb and raises it up a out 15-20mm otherwise it will stop the choke working properly (ask me how I know ) also I think the 410 airbox will restrict the 1.6 to be honest, in the inlet and outlet are quite small.

Re: Which air filter?
As the 44mm SU is the carb of choice on the 1.6 it makes sense that everything should be above about 44mm diameter as not to restrict it. Thats how I see it anyway.
