Free wheeling hub problem
Just bought a Vitara.
One of the manual FWHs has stuck in Free position.
I tried turning it with gently with grips (as someone else has obviously done) & the plastic is just breaking away.
What's the best way to proceed?

my recent purchase vit fwh had both seized in the free possition, you will need to take them apart and free them up.
the very small gap between the ally hub and the plastic had filled up with some sort of substance that was like super glue.
i had to take it apart and chip the muck away with a small screwdriver and a wire brush.
this happens a lot when they are not used in 4wd for a long time.
it is not a hard job but you must make sure you put the parts in order.
there is a step by step somewhere on one of these forums.

I've had a search, but can't find the step by step.
Can anyone else point me to it.
I assume I'll need some new bits, as the plastic know is damaged. Is that bit replaceable?

Ahh, i had a chat to a guy who i bought all my offroad gear off and he said that the platic ones are known to break down and he showed me his one and it just crumbled in his hand, he said something about buying a new one with a brass bearing or something similar ? not sure if that helps but it looks broken.

It is deffo broken.
The question is can I lock the hub some other way temporarily. And can I get a replacement part, or do I need a whole new hub?

You can probably still lock it by stripping it and cleaning it down and then either putting it back together in the lock position or you might just about get away with using it if it gets free enough. When they are clean and well lubricated they dont take much force at all to turn.
Just take it apart and clean it and all will become apparent. They are a really simple design so just whip it apart in a logical order.

If I remove the wheel, it should be obvious how to take it to bits?

best thing you can do with them hubs is throw them in the bin they are rubbish
better of getting some aisin ones
or some vits have some fitted with ones that are basicly the same as the aisin ones but without the name on them
