Straight through exhaust

Post by 12callum » Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:00 am

Hi guys, any one know the law/rules on straight through exhausts? on my 90 samurai the exhaust is nakered, there's to many holes to patch up so was thinking of making one to save money!
Will I need to keep any of the old one for the M.O.T eg emissions, noise etc and will it effect performance +/-!

Also I've read somewhere that if I tape over the rust behind the seats etc it may pass the mot? Is this true as there not allowed to pull it up? If so I might get an M.O.T and sort the rust out when the weather gets a bit better!

Hello I have a straight through on my truck and its loud but does sound nice and throaty I would say it gives a little performance gain but nothing to brag about  but as I say it all depends on the tester as all mot testers are different.

And regarding tapping over rust well thats the first time I have heard of doing that if you put tape over it. They will ethier pull it up or stuff a screw driver in it so I would get it plated also its near a structal point I would deffo cut the rot out and plate it up and do a propper job

I would advise against a straight through exhaust, you'll get fed up of the noise within about 500 metres  I would imagine it would fail for being too loud as well.

If you need welding done, take a few pics of what needs doing and I could come over with my Mig for a small fee providing there is access to a power supply at your garage? Tom is right in an area so close to a seatbelt mount and body mount they'll just stab a screwdriver through it
That only really works on non structural areas and sharp edges.

Wow thanks Scottie, I'll try and get some photos later! Unfortunately it's on the body mount behind the drivers seat! I really want to take the body off to cut all the rust out but space and time at the mo are in short supply! Apart from that I could probably fix the exhaust for now! I'm desperate to get her on the road but equally don't want to rush it then have to redo it later :S!
