high idle when lights are on

Post by troupy » Mon Feb 04, 2013 7:19 pm

iv got an sj413 hard top with a very strange problem, hopefully some knows whats going on haa. basically the engine will idle fine until i put the sidelights on, then it will rev to 2500-3000 rpm. i started pulling fuses out and realised that as soon as i removed the number plate lamp fuse the engine would tick over nicely again. any ideas would be much appreciated
Thanks

Sounds a bit high rpm wise but they do have an idle up system to compensate for any extra power drain when the lights heaters etc. are on.

You can adjust this bit most people just diss connect it as its not really needed.

It will either be a green or brown plug around the carb, but there's 2, one will be brown and the other will be green  one is for the fuel stop solenoid and the other is for the idle up but it seems to be a bit random whitch way round they put the colours  basically you want the one that is connected to a solenoid with a little push rod connecting to a vacuum valve thing with some pipes connected.
I think that's what it sort of looks like anyway, I took mine off and binned it all years ago when I was still running the original carb.

Thats probably your idle up system. It raises the idle speed when you use your lights and stuff, but should only raise it to around 1500 rpm. I dissconnected mine and i think alot of other people have aswell.
Scott beat me to it :D . I think it is the green plug in the picture.

My idle speed drops when I turn things on. Also, if I lift the engine off idle lights get brighter and the fans spins faster. I thought this was normal but my dad said otherwise a while ago.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Sj410s don't have an idle up system dude and only a small output alternator 45A I don't think the revs should really drop though?

My Sammy has the weber so no idle up, when I put a heavy load on my alternator ie all my spotlights, you can hear the engine note change, the revs drop slightly and my battery light glows faintly,

My battery light never comes on once the engine is running but you can hear the engine speed slow a bit when I put the headlights on.
