1.6 Engine into a SJ410

Post by HuwJones » Mon Mar 11, 2013 7:49 pm

I've been thinking of swapping the 1 litre engine out of my SJ410 with a 1.6 Vitara engine. I'm not going to do it any time soon; I’ll probably do it next year after my insurance has come down a bit.

What I’d like to do is gather all of the bits, and refurbish all of them before putting them in. So I know I need another engine and some sort of an adaptor plate, but do I need a SJ413 gearbox? Or would my 1989 SJ410 gearbox do?
If I can use my 410 gearbox, where can I get an adaptor plate, or drawings to make one?

Has anybody got some photos of the engine mounts of a Vitara engine in a SJ410 for me to have a rough idea of what I will need to do.

Thanks!

Its not really an exact straight swap but it can be done :)

you'd need to find a 1300 clutch, gearbox, flywheel, sump, oil pick up tube , exhaust manifold and adapt some engine mounts, Also you will need a "skinny starter" and modify the oil pick up tube that lives in the sump, aswell as this you need to sort out a little bit of wiring but its nothing serious! ;)

im sure someone will correct me if im wrong but i think thats the basics anyway

Tom pretty much nailed it.

The 1300 sump and oil pickup isn't essential if you run extended bump stops.

You don't have to use an adaptor plate.

Have a read of this thread, there's some pics of one way to do the engine mounts etc.

I've never bothered with the 1.3 sump, as dan said either a bit of lift with lowered bump stops or moving the axle 25mm forwards will help clear the 1.6 sump.

I've heard that the SJ 413 gearbox will fit directly into 'later' SJ410s Is my October 1989 SJ a 'later' one?

That’s convenient! Now I just need to get all of the bits!

My SJ has a 2 inch shackle lift, would this be enough to clear the Vitara sump? How much of a job is it to move the axle 25mm forewards?

Thanks

Not too major. Would probably require new u bolts and the axles needs to be clear enough to drill into the perches.

Perches need redrilling 25mm back and the plate on top of the spring also needs redrilling. Then bolt it back up.
