Huw's '89 SJ 410

Post by HuwJones » Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:17 pm

I thought I’d just start this thread showing what I’ve done and what I will do to my SJ. Here's what I’ve done over the last 2 weekends.

1) Welding a patch on the inner arch on the driver side.
2) Waterproof the back 'hatch' and the roof
3) New wheels and tyres
4) New fuel tank and fuel lines
5) Service engine gearbox, transfer box and differentials.
6) Attach spot lamps to bumper
7) Patch bumper
8) Re-wire spotlights
9) Make battery box and battery securing clamp.

and the To-Do list (next few weeks)

1) Sort out rust on bodywork.
2) Home made bumpers (ones on it are ok for now, but very rotten)
3) Removable aluminium roof and hatch in back.
4) Re-waxoil part of chassis and underneath.

To-do list 'eventually'
1) Completely strip down to chassis and rebuild (sometime in the next 5 years!)
2) Winch (within a year)
3) 1.6 Vitara engine conversion (within a year)

I will upload some photos tomorrow.

Looks good. Can't wait for the photos. Good to see you are on top of the oily bits.

I can't believe how short your to do list is. Mine is just depressing.

That's the 'short' to do list. There's another one for the little inconvenient things that I can live with for now. Like getting some proper window winders to replace the mole grips that I use to open the windows now and making some sort of roof rack so I can start using my kayak again!

Give mike harris a shout for window winders. I got some off him along with various other bits. Did me a decent deal.

Here is some photos as i promised.

Image
The switchbox i made for the Top Spotlamps, Bumper Spotlamps, Interior light and 'Spare' (Eventually for a winch 8-) )

Image
The 'Black One' dwarfed by co-workers Landys. I bought it off the brother of the guy that owns the Disco.

Image
The 'Black One' at the bottom of the access road to Cwmorthin, a local valley that's full of quarries an mines.

Image
Road alloys (front) and the Amazon off roaders i got with the car. I've kept the Amazon wheels for offroading.

Image
Replacing the fuel tank at work. I'm working over a 1860s built pit that's used to service the 'Double Fairlies' of the Ffestiniog Railway (my employers)

Image
At work with the offroading wheels on.

Image
The rotten bits that once held the indicator and dim light on the bumper.

Image
New indicator / dim light mounting bracket. Will be held on with a stainless steel M4 bolt and nut.

Image
Hole in bumper filled, before grinding and painting.

Image
Front lights put on. They where originally off a MK2 Scirocco. I will eventually make a new bumper out of something a bit more robust! There isn't much material left on the mounts! I've patched it up to get it pass the MOT in April!

For my 1.6 engine swap, would a engine out of any 1.6 Vitara do, or does it have to be a specific range of years?
Thanks

Easiest is the 1600 8v carburettor engine.

I'm doing the 1600 8v SPi. But i'm converting it to a carburettor (SU HIF44). Easy to do just requires a adaptor or manifold mod. Also requires an electric fuel pump as the standard SPi pump is too high pressure.

I'm led to believe all the wiring for the 8v is almost identical to the SJ wiring.

Hardest, from my point of view is the 16v Mpi, requires wiring, ECUs and al kindsa technical shit.
