Why does my SJ pop into Neutral when engine braking?
whenever i try to engine brake, the lever that switches between 2WD and 4WD pops into Neutral position.
any guesses? otherwise the anus works great in both 2WD and 4WD modes.

Check the transfer box mount.
When you use engine brake the transmission is under torque in the oppossite direction. If the mounts are bent or knackered or missing the lever may be hitting off the transmission tunnel and knocking it into neutral.

mine was doing this and it was the transfer box so i swapped it out for a 410 box , my solution was wrap a a bungie cord around the leaver and secure it so somewere it worked for me and if it really did need to jump out of gear it could as the bungie could stretch unlike cable ties it worked for months tbh

Is the gaiter on the wrong way round? Put mine on backwards once and it kept jumping in to neutral

i will attempt to locate the mounts and see what i can find out.
i am new to mechanics, especially 4WD, so i am going in blind.
i found some basic info on the web, if you guys know of any links to SJ stuff in particular, that would be helpful.
thanks.

Nearly any info you need will be on here somewhere bud. I don't have any transfer box photos for some reason though. Give it a bit and i'm sure someone will stick a photo or diagram of the mounts up.
Cant really miss them. 3 rubber squares with a stud on either end. one end bolts to the t'box other to it's mounts.
