F10D Viability
Mentioned this briefly a couple of days ago.
Basically did a little reading and apparently a 1.1 16 valve fuel injected engine from a Suzuki Alto, supposedly an F10D engine, has a 'similar' engine block to the F10As that they put in SJs.
I'm wondering, if physically it was a bolt in swap to mount the engine to the chassis, gearbox etc. might it be a worthwhile change? Paperwork suggests it should perform similar to a G13 but because it's injected you ought to get almost twice the mpg.
As fuel injected engines go it looks pretty simple. Parts shouldn't be a problem as it looks like this engine was used in the Alto for a fair few years.
I'm just thinking that, seeing as I really don't want to get rid of the old girl, if I could find one of these engines I might be able to seriously reduce the fuel outlay and still keep her fairly standard (in that she can be returned to standard-ish condition eventually).
So what do you reckon? It might save on a fair bit of fabricating compared to a 1.6 conversion for a 410 chassis. Plus a decent re-map could probably see you even more power if you wanted it, though I'd be doing the conversion for fuel economy.
First thing to find out is will it bolt to the standard 410 engine mounts and gearbox? If it does next thing is it'll probably require a bespoke front pipe and a CAT in the exhaust, high pressure fuel pump and regulator because I'll bet the pump and reg are in-tank on an Alto, possibly a sump mod/conversion. Might want to somehow fit a standard 410 temp gauge sensor in the cooling system.

There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Re: F10D Viability
My mate got given an early alto with this engine in it. Its a great revvy little motor.
It is rather basic like you say so shouldnt be too hard to fit. Just find a Sammy sport tank with the internal pump.
Bet it would do wonders for fuel efficiency on a road going SJ like you say.

Re: F10D Viability
About 30 most of the time. I'd say 28 to 32. I reckon a little fuel injected engine could probably get closer to 50 or so. Maybe more because I'll drop the 5 speed in at the same time if it's not already been done by then.Jordi wrote:What MPG you getting now Ed?

Re: F10D Viability
Pretty respectable that.
Problem with sticking anything newer and injected in, it will take all originallity away from it. Engine is whats makes it so original.

That's true but that's why this is the first engine conversion I've really thought about. It's basically a 16 valve mpfi version of the same engine.Jordi wrote:Pretty respectable that.

Re: F10D Viability
I say go for it, I would imagine they use a pretty much identical block as Suzuki don't like to redesign something if they don't have to so should bolt up with minimal fuss.
The electrics wshouldn be that complicated either, might need to add a VSS onto the speedo but that's a simple job, as dan said as well just get a samurai injection tank and that will sort out the fuel pump.
If I was you I would buy a complete car with the engine fitted so that you have the loom and everything that's needed, then sell/scrap all the stuff you don't need to make your money back, I've done this for my j20a conversion and hopefully will end up actually making a bit of money as well as having all the engine and bits I need for nothing, it only owes me another £250 before I break even and I've only sold the roof

Peer pressure!

The gearboxes sell on for 150 on their own!
This sounds like an ace idea. From the looks of the gear boxes it should bolt up.

Just up the road aswell Ed!
Do it. For £400 you can make your money back almost in scrap value.

look at that
And dont forget Ed, if there isn't a lambda after the cat you can just decat it and not have to worry about it, you only have to meet the same emissions requirements as you do now as it goes by the age of the car and not the age of the engine
