Stuck starter

Hi all my starter has finally given up on me, does anyone know how to rebuild one?

If you take the two long bolts out the top, it should just come apart. Then just give every thing a spit and polish make sure the brush's are ok and put it back together. Thats all i do with mine and it seems to work ok.

yead, do what ferris said. generally mud and muddy water will find it's way into the starter ovber time, or if you do some decent offroading. it's easy to strip and clean one, doesn't cost anything, and works in a lot of cases. if that doesn't work, check for voltage at the starter, as it might be some of the circuitry, but this is not likely. another thing to try if a strip and clean doesn't work, is just to meter through the motor windings, and see if anything is out of order. having said all that, just give a strip and clean, and It'll probably work

Thanks for the reply, much use! I've stripped it and freed everything apart from the solenoid which I cant see how to free that up?

I've just used fine wet and dry to clean the surfaces.
As long as the plunger moves freely

Got it out. The plunger moves freely and all of it moves now, greased the inside of the 'barrel' as such. But it still won't start....was the grease a bad move?

I must admit I don't grease them as you don't want grease to get into the main contacts at the back.
Have you bench tested it or checked to make sure it gets 12v on the solenoid terminal when trying to start.
Bench test video, just use a piece of wire if you don't have a fancy switch like this chap.

Just don't short things out with the leads

Haha love the video, it now works, the starter just kept doing a single click so the solenoid was engaging (I think) but now it actually cranks and starts! The sj runs a lot better as well since sorting the starter, I think it the problem might of been the copious amounts of wd-40 I used to clean and free up the starter
