Swivel hub greasing and replacement rubber and felt

Post by SteveR » Tue Jun 04, 2013 11:05 pm

Opinions needed please.
1986 sj410 swivel hubs have never been apart. There is no play in wheel bearings or king pins.
big rubber gasket and felts on swivel part are knackered and need replacing.

Do I just replace these bits and try to add grease via a bolt hole on top king pin plate or should I go in and have a good look and clean.

Where do I get new rubber gaskets and felts, approx how much ££ and can they be replaced without taking all apart ( think I read is possible on Italian site but my Italian is not good enough to fully understand )

Also what grease to use in there, especially if trying to go through bolt hole.

And what grease to pack into free wheeling hubs.

Today managed to change all oils in trasmissions and diffs using plastic syringe and tubing and lying on the my kid's old changing mat, almost luxury so glad I kept it.

Thanks
Steve

I would have it off and re-grease the cv's. To replace the seals without removing you would have to cut the seal. Also if oil is leaking from it you will need the inner seal that goes in the end of the axle tube.

To do felts and seals the whole stub axles need to be removed as they are a tight fit over the axles case end (the ball).

Think it is CV moly dab grease in the cv joint and LM grease for the bearings. I'll be corrected if i'm wrong.

Really you need to strip the hubs to get the new felts on, but i have seen people cut the felts so they can just put them straight over the axle. I striped both my hubs down at the weekend and re greased everything. Its a messy job but worth doing. Dont pack the free wheeling hubs with normal grease its to thick. I usually clean them out and spray a load of lithium grease in there.

when I did mine, the felts were genuine suzuki, and came in two parts for each side. the rubber however was one piece, so axle will have to be taken apart to fit this on
It's not a question of how much you spend on your suzuki, but when your money will run out

Just so you guys know, it does say in the service manual that it is OK to cut the rubber seal. It just says to put the cut bit at the top

But that defeats the object of a seal! It will probably be easier to strip it all down anyway probably!

I'd imagine you can cut the seal and then use a super glue to put it back together. This is sometimes done with 'O' rings. You just need to ensure you align it correctly.

Then put the 'cut' at the top.
