Rear drum leak

Post by ferris » Sun Oct 04, 2009 6:27 pm

More problems im afraid. Just noticed some sort of oil leaking from the rear drum. Dont think it brake fluid, cause im still alive! I can only assume its the diff oil.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

its more than likely a rear wheel bearing going, meaning the oil seal has failed. jack that wheel up and i bet there will be play in that bearing! its an easy job to do! have a look in the DIY section 8-)

What does it smell like?

Might not be the bearing, could just be the seal, but while you are in there you may as well do the bearing.

Cheers guys. I did give it a sniff, thought it smelt like transmission fluid but it difficult to tell. As long as its not life threatening il add it to my to do list. Its turning into quite a long list now

Dont let it get too long like mine did.

3 months it took me, and only just finished

Both rear wheel bearings where done, not a big job. Hour long job max.

Seems to be a bit more of a problem than i first thought. Drove it to work today and it was making all manner of strange noises, and one of the wheels was occasionally locking up. I think maybe all the oil has fucked up the drum. Dont think im going to drive it until i get a chance to sort it out.

On a brighter note, got my add-a-leaf kit though the post today 8-) :P
