Diff oil seal
I noticed the flange on my rear diff was damp and everything else was covered in dry crusty mud.
Taking a wild guess its another oil seal to do. Is it a simple job?
Any chance of a diagram and part number please Darrell
Thanks

Re: Diff oil seal
Is there any play in the bearing?
Ideally you should replace the crush collar as well and reset the pinion bearing preload, otherwise the pinion bearings will fail prematurely.
Might be a good time to fit a solid crush collar

Re: Diff oil seal
Think you will need a new crush collar or to re-setup the diff if you undo and re-rorque the pinion nut.
I had written it anyway!

Not quite so simple then. May just keep topping it up till i get full float and rebuilt diff in my spare axle.

Re: Diff oil seal
I would fix it before it's too late! That's what I was doing until 90% of the oil disappeared over a short period of time and then the carrier bearings got starved of oilJordi wrote:Not quite so simple then. May just keep topping it up till i get full float and rebuilt diff in my spare axle.

Re: Diff oil seal
When I pulled my sj out the garage for the firstbtime in two gears my front pinion seal went and it dumped all its oil along the a27 and murded the diff.

Re: Diff oil seal
So maybe a diff rebuild is now going to be a priority.

Re: Diff oil seal
I'm sure it'll be fine for the weekend but i would do it sooner rather than later, its only a crush collar and seal. you don't need to fully strip the diff to change them.

Re: Diff oil seal
I had a read through the diff service stickie before.
Quite indepth stuff. Sure i can manage. I'll get the bits ordered for next weekend. Keep checking the level. Pleased i decided to trailer it down.
Luckily it doesn't do many miles and its not a problems checking the oil at home or at work.
