by free wheeling hubs do you mean the one with the switch that says "lock" and "unlock" I think, I've been told that the sj carb is meant to be better than SU when tuned properly..

I'm not familiar with the standard carb, but I do know mine was fucked and if you're only getting 20mpg yours might be too.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

I would personally go for an SU, it will make your zook better! and give you more MPG over either an untuned carb or a broken carb.
As scottie says you could get it retuned, but you can't adjust the mixture on the standard carb so its a bit of a pain

I must admit that since ive changed over to electronic ignition (provided by scottie from his stash of suzuki spares) it has been so much better. that and a clean up and tune of the su. ive only put 20 quid in since ive been driving it and ive done a fair amount of miles

The SU is no better than the 410 carb in my opinion, in fact I would rather run the 410 carb on an F10, you can adjust the mixture on it. it's only the 1.3 and 1.6 carbs that are garbage and you can adjust the mixture on them as well.
