serious lack of power

Post by timwilks13 » Mon Aug 05, 2013 12:25 pm

went out properly for the first time last night with my new 1.3 fitted, 1st and 2nd pulled fine but the higher gears just didnt pull at all, i had more power from my 970cc. all plugs are firing, su needle is out 1.5 turns, compression test was fine. not sure whats going on and dont fancy doing 25mph all the way to wagtail. any clues as to what might be the cause?

Sounds like the air/fuel ratio is wrong.

There isn't a generic amount of turns that you need do on the SU mixture screw, all engines will need a slightly different adjustment.

Could also be a timing issue. Over-retarded or over-advanced

all that does is adjust the air fuel ratio, it should drive with it set anywhere really but won't necessarily be the correct mixture.

Do you know what spring and needle is fitted?

I think its a yellow spring, so know I need to get a red, and not sure of the needle, will strip it and see, didn't think the wrong needle and spring would make it this powerless though?

You'd be surprised. The wrong spring can make it massively over/underfuel.

Their website has changed. I think because there are options for needles and springs based in the age of the carb you need to phone them.
