SJ knuckle joint seal & felt replacement
SJ knuckle joint seal & felt replacement
Following post about wheel bearing nut and lack of socket the right side I've taken a short cut and taken whole hub off with wheel bearings in situ.
I'm pretty sure that it's the first time they've been off in 28 yrs ( only 25k miles ) but still pretty happy with how clean and cv joint still filled with grease, felt and seal knackered.
I live in small town in hills in Italy, amazingly local small car factors had 2 sets of felts and large oil seal in stock, but only 1 small axle inner oil seal ( bugger )
The felt and seal came in kit with set of half moon metal retainers. They were made by Maruti Suzuki India ltd. !!!!!!
As stated on packet
" Be good to your maruti, avoid spurious spares"
The felt and seal seem ok but the half moon retainer rings are crap, good job old ones are fine.
Paid equivalent of £ 21 each side for the seals ( how can a bit of felt and a rubber seal be £10 each!!)
To anyone else scared of taking on this job I'd say the most difficult bit is the snap ring removal and replacement under fixed or free wheeling hub and disconnecting steering arms, both could do with having the right tools.
Anyway point of post, have seen somewhere that I should be putting some sort of sealant on with the half moon retainers holding seals and felt in, is this so and if so what sealant should I use.
Thanks

Re: SJ knuckle joint seal & felt replacement
Just use some instant gasket between the first retainer and knuckle and oil seal, No sealant for the felts and use "Suzuki super grease A" on the seal. I think thats pretty much just LM grease as its what they state for the wheel and kingpin bearings as well
Use instant gasket on the stub axle face and caliper mount if you want to, I only usually put it on the stub axle.

Re: SJ knuckle joint seal & felt replacement
I prefer to carefully put the new seal and felt over the knuckle ball without cutting it myself but this is from the service manual

One side on mine is cut and the other one isn't. Both the oil seals failed at the same time so I don't think it makes that much different as long as the cut is at the top!

I know this is an old post but what sort of grease do you use? Just a lithium based grease? Or do you use actual suzuki super grease A?
Re: SJ knuckle joint seal & felt replacement
LM grease as far as I'm aware

Does anyone in the UK stock these bits? I could do with new felts and seals on mine, but I haven't got the balls to ring the stealer.
I've seen these on eBay, but surely you can buy them closer than Australia!!

Nice one.
The whole set of bits for the front hub don't seem too bad for price. I'm going to have FOUR to maintain soon
