410 burning oil

Post by dazerede » Thu Aug 22, 2013 10:04 pm

I checked my oil level the last week and it was 1/4 full so I topped it up I think it was about 2.4 litres and that was at top of stick so I checked it today and it has dropped a little bit but hardly anything

There is no leaks and running sweet as a nut but it just burns about 1/2 a litre a mounth

It's an old engine so will burn a Bit of oil, as long as there is no visible blue smoke on start up or while its running then there should be nothing to worry about.

when you say there was 2.4l is that how much you put in? Or how much was left in the engine?? Between the two marks on the dip stick should only be around 1l. the engine only holds 3l ;)

All is ok no blue smoke

There wasnt much oil in there  I'm sure I added about 2 litres as I bought a 5 litre can of.oil 4 mounths ago and I replaced the oil and oilfilter and it takes 3L of oil that means I put 2Litres in last week as the oil is all gone out of the tin

Seems like a lot to me.

Is there any oil in the coolant or emulsion on the dipstick / filler cap?

I've put about 1lt in my 1.6 since i put it in. Part of that was down to a seeping sump plug.

The filter normally holds a bit as well so you could have put around 3.25l in when you changed the oil.

Out of interest what oil did you use? Sometimes if an engine has spent most o its life running on old mineral oil, then changing it to semi-synthetic can flush some of the crap out and then they'll start burning a bit of oil and/or leaking.

If there was only 1l of oil left in the engine then I can almost Guarantee that the oil pressure light would have been coming on during braking etc.

Are you sure its not smoking? Or leaking somewhere? Or that someone else hasn't used some of the oil? If it was using that much I would imagine the engine would be smoking a bit.

I would recommend checking the oil weekly to monitor it properly, and to avoid the oil pressure light coming on, every time that light comes on damage is being done to your engine.

Bit of advice for you.... don't use cheap oil! I know several people of have gone down the tesco oil route and their engines have given up the ghost shortly afterwards!!!

Ah. Lidl oil, that might explain a bit, try Castrol.

Yeah might be an idea to change to some decent oil and a new filter then see how much oil it then uses.

I get the unipart own brand stuff normally. Used it for years with no issues.
