Rear drums

Post by ben_moto501 » Thu Nov 12, 2009 10:24 pm

Hi, I wanted to replace the drums on my Samurai but was rather shocked when I saw the price of them! I cam accross some on Ebay which cost me £100 for a pair, quite a bargain in comparison to genuine ones! Only when I came to fit them they were 10mm (5mm each side) too small!! How can this be when the guy said they were for an SJ 413?? Are the Samurai drums ever so slightly bigger than normal SJ413 ones?
If that is the case then I have a pair of drums, brand new, for sale! They're not genuine ones though but are excellent quality... They just need wheel studs putting in! Make me an offer?

If you still have your old drums go for the rear disc conversion on the DIY page, i have done it and haven't looked back. you will however need the transmission handbrake on the 410 t-box, unless you do the rover caliper conversion, which i think can be done purly with bolt on parts, no fabrication needed! which by the sounds of your other post will suit you well :p

another option to better braking is to use lwb vit drums on the stub end of axle you can remove x4 bolts and swap the entire assembly, personally i didn'tn know there was a difference between the different models of 413 and samurai, I do know that some 410's didn't have servo assisted braking and that early 410's had the same brakes as lj80's so maybe its for an early 410?

I've looked at a rear disc conversion but to be honest I don't see the point! If it was a highly tuned road vehicle then maybe but it's a 4x4 and it never goes that fast! The drums are actually pretty powerful! Maybe I won't be able to find a use for these new drums... But gutted as they cost a fair bit!

Thanks again!

Ben
you wont think that when you get out in the mud a bit more and it gets in the drums and wears the shoes out really quickly! i used to replace mine at least once every 5 months

Ben,, there are two types of axle fitted to the samuari, first type off drum looks like a coventional drum, the other is the spanish type, were the drum has a large lip about halfway along the flat edge. (this type uses a handbrake cable from drum to drum if i recall).. the jap type uses two separate cables. the reason dan suggested discs, is once youve been off roading, the drums fill with mud/water/grit etc. this will seize componants and wear the shoes at a rapid rate, worst still jam your brakes on!!!.
i have a pair off spanish drums here if you need them..
